Moving full steam ahead
RUGBY League is still going strong thanks to Crewe and Nantwich Steamers.
After the Wolves upped sticks, concerns grew that the borough had lost the sport for good.
But thankfully there’s a new club ready to take up the mantle.
The Steamers are gearing up for their first full season in the RL Merit League and are hoping everybody gets behind them.
Originally linked with the Wolves via a youth set-up, media officer Josh Grant explains what went on.
“In 2007 the joint venture turned sour due to the increase of Warrington-based players pushing local players out of the team.”The local lads felt let down by the Wolves’ coaching staff so near the end, the original Steamers staff decided to break away and reform the Steamers.”
This year the club has formed links with their Union counterparts although theywill stay at the Legends.

The Steamers will hope to progress in the RL Merit League which includes teams from across the North and Midlands along with one club from the Netherlands.
Maybe one day they’ll face Phil Johnson’s newly-created Lymm Wolves who start off in the RLC over the next few weeks.
First up for The Steamers is a home clash against the German Exiles on May 10.
A recent fund-raising evening made £1,200.
Sponsors who supported the event were Brendan Grant Sports Injury therapist, RLH Printing, Crewe & Nantwich Physiotherapy, Berlin Sports Ltd, Aspect Digital Photography and Aeroparts International Limited.
Training is on Wednesday at Legends for all interested.

STEAMERS skipper Josh Grant was delighted with his side’s brave fight against tough opposition, on Saturday. The powerful hosts were much stronger than the youthful Crewe and Nantwich outfit, but still had to fight all the way to earn a draw. Several Steamers men had to leave the field after being hurt in the heat of battle, and Grant had praise for their resolve. He added: ‘It was hard work but our forwards stood firm despite a much heavier opposition, with great defensive performances from Arron Voller and Chris Maloney in particular.’ Crewe came under pressure from the start but solid defence meant it was 20 minutes before the Scorpions got their first try. They were not ahead for long, as Simon Burley threw a dummy and put Chris Sproston in for a well worked try from the restart. Gareth Tones converted. Half-backs Michael Greatbanks and Burley controlled the Crewe attack and teed up a try for Tones, which Burley converted, but the pendulum swung again as the hosts fought back with a try of their own. Slick play from the visitors had the burly Scorpions working hard, and Crewe hit the front again when Voller crossed the line and Tones converted. But again Shropshire were able to make it all square when they crossed just before the break. The influential Burley got a try soon after the restart, with the accurate Tones adding the extras, but Sam Germain and Reece Burley got injured as the big Scorpions began to make their physical presence tell. The hosts scored two converted tries in quick succession, but the South Cheshire lads dug deep to produce scores from Jason Day and Tom Smart - one of which was converted - to earn a draw. |
